To Fight the Bug, You Must Understand the Bug

It’s getting warmer out so that means more bugs.  I’ve just accepted that I have to put on bug spray twice a day if I don’t want to have big ugly red bites all over my arms and legs.  I’ve even found a giant cockroach and I haven’t totally freaked out. It’s not so much that I’m afraid of the big bugs, its just the crunch they make when you smoosh them that I can’t stand. The centipedes totally creep me out though.  I have to get my husband to get those.  We’ve had one come through our kitchen sink and two others through the bathtub drain. We were out to lunch the other day and there was a giant cockroach on the ground under the next table.  A year ago, I probably would have gotten up and walked out. Now I know that it doesn’t matter how much you clean your kitchen, those buggers find a way and a reason to come in.

The other morning, I woke up with a bunch of bug bites in places I don’t normally get bug bites. They always find a way to get the one little spot that I missed with the bug spray; the corner of my eye, the cuticle on my nail, but this time they were in places where the sun don’t shine.  My stepson also was covered with bug bites on his stomach and back.  I’m not sure why we were the only two who were targeted.  We had turned on the a/c and closed all the windows so I couldn’t understand where these bugs had come from.  Then the next evening we came home and we had more bugs inside the house than there were outside.  I accept that we let one or two in as we open the door to come in and out, but this was an invasion.  We had to find out how they were getting in the house.  We found the one window that was the problem.  We have those windows that fold in so you can clean them and sometimes they can fold in a little bit when you are opening or closing them if you are not careful.  When they are in this slightly open position, you can’t easily see it.  Luckily, we didn’t have to check too many windows before we found the open one.  So at least we were able to plug the hole, but now what to do about all the bugs in our house.  First, put more bug spray on.  Second, bring the bug zapper into the house.

I’m a problem solver.  Whenever there is a problem I want to solve, I read and research and troubleshoot to fix the issue.  As many different brands of bug spray are tried and mosquito repelling plants I buy, I will have to just live with this one being unsolvable.  As they say, insects will not take over the world, they already own it.
